Population Change of the United Kingdom and Ireland over 200 years

Population Change of the UK and Ireland over 200 years

The population of the UK has experienced demographic transformation – the transformation from a pre-industrial population, with high birth and death rates and slow population increase, through a stage of declining mortality and faster rates of population increase, to a stage of low birth and death rates with lower rates of growth. This natural growth has been followed in the past 2 decades by increasing migration into the UK, which since 1999 has surpassed natural change.

Nowadays, 83.2 percent of the UK’s population is urban (~56,5 million people, 2020). The median age in the UK is about 40.5 years.
