According to the Pew Research Center survey in 2014, 22.8 percent of the American population is religiously unaffiliated, atheists made up 3.1%, and agnostics made up 4% of the U.S. population.
Research conducted by Will Gervais using indirect methods in 2018 concluded that 26 percent of Americans are atheists, which is much higher than in previous surveys.
Atheists per U.S. state
Perceptions of God differ considerably and are essentially subjective. When Gallup lately asked about faith in God, 89% of U.S. citizens said they believe. But, in a separate poll, only 53% of Americans stated they believe in an anthropomorphic God. Many survey questions also do not leave much room for expressions of doubt. Public Religion Research Institute determined that 27% of the people, including approximately 40% of young adults, responded they sometimes have doubts about the presence of God.
Many atheists in the United States hide their identity and beliefs from family members, close friends, and other people, fearing that it will affect attitudes toward them.
For instance, interestingly, according to the original constitutions of 8 U.S. states that have not changed from the 1800s, atheists are prohibited from holding public office.
