The legal and cultural expectations for date and time representation differ among nations. It is essential to know all-numeric calendar dates used in a particular country to know what date is expected.

People have traditionally written abbreviated dates according to their local culture, producing all-numeric equivalents to dates such as “25 October 2022” (25/10/22, 25/10/2022, 25-10-2022, or 25.10.2022) and “October 25, 2022” (10/25/22 or 10/25/2022). As a result, that is impossible to interpret correctly without identifying the writer’s origin.

Nowadays the ISO 8601 format YYYY-MM-DD (2022-10-25) is intended to harmonize these formats and ensure accuracy in all situations.

The map below shows the legal and cultural expectations for date formats vary among populations.
