Dogs and cats ownership by U.S. state mapped
66% of U.S. households, or nearly 85 million families, have a pet, according to the National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association in 2020.
The number of pets in the United States had increased by 56% since 1988, when the survey was first conducted.
Dogs are the most popular pets in the United States, followed by cats. There are 63.4 million U.S. households that own dogs and 42.7 million cats, respectively.
