Sheep (Ovis aries) are ruminant mammals typically kept as livestock. There are more than one billion domestic sheep live on our planet.

Sheep are the earliest animals to be domesticated for agricultural purposes native to Iran, descended from the wild mouflon.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the top 5 nations by the number of heads of sheep were: 

  • China (147 million sheep), 
  • Australia (101 million), 
  • India (62 million), 
  • Iran (52 million), 
  • Sudan (46 million).
