I hear there is a great deal of muskeg in northerly parts of Ontario, which does not bear trees. Also, the James Bay extending so far south may allow frigid arctic air to flow further south than in other provinces. This is pure speculation on my part. It would be interesting to know how the density and type of trees varies below the tree line from coast-to-coast.
