Worldwide, women participate less in the formal or paid work, sector of the economy than do men. The International Labor Organization estimates total worldwide female participation in the paid workforce
at 40%, with generally a lower rate in the less developed countries (closer to 35%) and a higher rate in the more developed countries (closer to 45% in the OECD).

The widest gender wage gaps are found in the Africa region (36.1%), while the narrowest are in Latin America and the Caribbean (14.3%).
