From 1990 to 2015, extreme global poverty decreased, on average, by a percentage point. From 2015 and 2018 severe poverty declined only 1.4 percentage points.
The two areas with the most deprived people in 1990 were East Asia and South Asia, estimates for 80% of the extreme poor. With China’s fast decline of poverty, the density of the world poor moved from East Asia in the 1990s to South Asia in 2002, and then to Sub-Saharan Africa in 2010.
