A law organizing the first national park, Yellowstone, was signed in 1872. Principles for selecting national parks cover natural attractions, unique ecosystems, and geological peculiarities. Nowadays the U.S. has 63 national parks. 14 American national parks are assigned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while 21 national parks are chosen by UNESCO as Biosphere Reserves, and 8 national parks are nominated in both UNESCO lists.
